I am currently working on a series that draws on the Holme Valley in Yorkshire, UK We moved here in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, and it has captured our hearts.
Our village nestles in the valley, enfolded by hills that are peppered with dry stone walls and rough tracks that have given me the opportunity to walk away the blues, breathe deeply and re-remember how good life can be.
The valley is home to old textile mills, no longer working, but the paths that I tread have been created by the footsteps of many millworkers. They walked these ways each day, swapping the sanctuary of their hillside cottages, for the noise and dirt of the weaving sheds.
As I now walk these same pathways, I feel the rootedness of my new life in a landscape that is weighted with history. In this valley, the past and the present come together in a haven that gives me a sense of connectedness that comforts and inspires me. This quilt - "Holme Valley" _has been juried into the SAQA Haven exhibition. as part of the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival.
In the landscape : hills, path ways, woodlands, fields, skies, walls and buildings, (More details about the inspiration for these quilts can be found on the Quilt Stories page)
I have recently started a new series, initiated by paper collages. The quilts are experiments with colour & scale
